What's the role?

An Indirect supervisor or assessor is a paid role to support students in traditional and non-traditional practice environments to meet the supervision and assessment standards of the relevant regulatory bodies

Practice Assessors assess student’s practice learning within placements and help support them achieve and provide best practice.

Conduct assessments to confirm student achievement of proficiencies and programme outcomes for practice learning to help them achieve their goals.

How does it work?

Indirect supervisors, assessors or practice educators work with students in a huge variety of settings, but can support them remotely or face to face.

We will support you through the process, but in simple terms this is how it works:

  • Register your interest (link to form)
  • Invited to attend a virtual information session
  • AEI onboarding to include contracting and pre-employment checks
  • You’ll be invited to consider a range of opportunities that match your skillset and availability
  • Assigned student and practice area
  • Paid at an agreed hourly rate by AEI for the hours you’ve worked
  • Play a vital role is shaping and developing the health and social care future workforce and helping our population

Support for you?

All of our Indirect supervisor or assessors have access to a range of support opportunities prior to and during your role supporting each placement.

This includes access to:

  • Online information session regarding the role
  • Support to familiarise yourself with the practice environment
  • On-going support from AEI
  • Peer support network
  • Annual AEI education updates including preparation for using practice portfolios

Training you need?

To be an Indirect supervisor or assessor you need a PEAP qualification or equivalent (e.g. ENB, 998/997, APPLE, SLiP).

The PEAP qualification is a mandatory requirement. However, if you don’t already have PEAP or an equivalent qualification*, this is available as a FREE online training package via the e-learning for health website. It includes 8, stand-alone, one-hour modules that can be completed at a time convenient for you.

*For those with an equivalent qualification you need to familiarise yourself with the most up to date education and training standards from your relevant regulatory body.

Who can apply

We are looking to recruit hourly paid registered nurses to provide indirect supervision and assessment in practice for Pre-Registration student Nurses.

Applicants will be registered with Nursing and Midwifery Council (any field) who have experience of being a Practice Supervisor and Assessor. The long arm supervisors and assessors will support learners in private, voluntary, and independent organisations. There will also be opportunities to support in a range of new and innovative placements held internally within a university setting where skills and proficiency are delivered.
